Today we're going to learn about horehound (marrubium vulgare). It's
element
is earth. It's planet is Mercury. And it's considered a hot herb.
Horehound
grows somewhat compactly but will spread and grow into a healthy
bed
over a period of time. It's a flowering herb which produces soft, white
blossoms.
When flowering, it may be gathered and dried.Tie it with a ribbon
and
hang in your home. It will help balance personal energy & keep the
home
free
from negative energy. Since it's a protective herb, make sachets or
amulets
with it. It's also used during exorcisms by scattering it about
where
the exorcism is taking place.
Horehound
was a Religious Herb of Egyptians and Hebrews.It's been known by
the
Hebrews as one of the bitter herbs of Passover since it has a
particularly
bitter taste. It's usually flavored with honey or licorice
root.
Egyptian
Priests called this plant the "Seed of Horus". It was considered
sacred
to Horus and was used as either incense or as a drink during rituals
dedicated
to him. It may also be used in rituals with Isis & Osiris. It
vibrates
with the energy of Hod.
It
is supposed to rid people of whatever is blocking their creativity and
inspiration.
It's a Visionary herb & a Magickal herb throughout most of the
world
today.It will help you perform your rituals with a clear mind and is
said
to bring forth creativity, inspiration, and new ideas. Many people who
do
divination's drink Horehound tea regularly and claim it enhances their
work.You
can also use the oil in psychic healings, aura cleansing, and
magickal
healings.
Horehound
is widely used for treatment of coughs and lung congestion. Many
people
take it in strong doses as a daily tonic and their cough and cold are
soon
gone. It's also an excellent herb to treat smoker's cough. It's used
when
fasting to cleanse the body of waste and unwanted matter.It's a gentle
purgative
and will not only cleanse but revitalize. Externally it's been
used
in the treatment of eczema and psoriasis. A lotion may be applied to
the
skin and a wash can be used to rinse hair.
Recipes
For
severe colds
Mix 1 cup each of dried white yarrow,spearmint, sage, catnip,
horehound,
verbena, and pennyroyal. Pour 1 pint boiling water over 2 1/2
tablespoons
of the herb mix. Cover & let stand 10 minutes. Strain & sweeten.
Reheat
and drink 1 cup every couple of hours. Use more often if sweating is
desired.
Horehound
cough syrup
Add 3 oz of horehound and 1 oz grated horseradish to 3 cups water.
Bring
to a boil & reduce heat to simmer. Simmer until liquid is reduced by
half.
Strain & add 3/4 cup honey. Take 2 teaspoons as needed for cough.
Horehound
cough drops
Simmer 1 cup horehound leaves & 1 tablespoon of Balm of Gilead in 1
pint
of
water for bout 15 minutes. Strain & add 2 cups sugar. Boil until the
mixture
spins a thread as it comes off the spoon. Drop by teaspoonful into
cold
water to form cough drops. Remove the drops from the water immediately.
Roll
the drops in powdered sugar after you drain off the water. This will
help
keep them from sticking to each other. Place in a tightly sealed
container.
Put
horehound and ash leaves in a bowl of water and stir. The combination
releases
healing energies. This is good to keep in a sick room.
Experiment
with other herbs until you find a recipe that suits you.Just
substitute
for the horehound and follow the above .
